How to upload an EPUB to ChatGPT (and an easier way)
- Sign in. Signed out, ChatGPT cannot upload any files, EPUB included.
- Click + → Add files and choose a DRM-free
.epub. Books bought in Kindle, Apple Books or Kobo are DRM-protected and will not open anywhere else. - Ask about the book. In our 14 October 2026 test, a Free-plan account accepted the EPUB and answered from the book itself.
- If the upload fails, or answers miss later chapters, convert the book with the free EPUB to text tool (it runs in your browser and never uploads the file), then upload the TXT or paste one chapter at a time.
EPUB is not on OpenAI's list of supported file types, so results can vary by account.
The easier way is to skip the upload. Import the EPUB into a reader that has AI built in, select the passage that stopped you, and ask AI about it on the same screen. The question goes out with that passage as context, and the answer is saved with the passage, so you never lose your place in the book.
